Configuring Outlook Express

An example speedypuppy.net account was used through the instructions. Please substitute your email address information for the account used in the instructions.

The example address is: blank@speedypuppy.net

Initial configuration:

1. Start Outlook Express from your desktop or from Start/Programs/Outlook Express.

2. When the main Outlook Express screen appears, click the on the Tools menu, then choose Accounts, as shown below.

3. Click on the Add button on the right and choose Mail, this will add a new mail account using the Wizard. The Wizard will guide us through the information gathering and configuration steps. Follow the Wizard and enter in the information asked in each screen.

4. On the Your Name screen, enter your regular name. Click the Next button when you are finished.

5. On the Internet E-mail address screen, choose "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use" and enter in your new e-mail address. This is your Reply-To address for your e-mail messages that you send. Click Next when you are finished.

6. On the E-mail Server Names screen, you will enter in the server names for your Incoming and Outgoing mail servers. Select either POP3 or IMAP. Then enter the Incoming mail server name (mail.<<yourdomain>>). In this example, the account is blank@speedypuppy.net, so the Incoming mail server name will be mail.speedypuppy.net.

On the same screen, enter the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server name, which will also be mail.<<yourdomain>> Click Next when you are finished.

7. On the Internet Mail Logon screen, enter the Account name (blank@speedypuppy.net in this example) and your email password. Do not enable Secure Password Authentication. We will be using a different security method later. Click Next when you are finished.

8. Click Finish to complete the configuration wizard

9. You will be returned to the Internet Accounts screen. Highlight your new mail account from the list of accounts shown in the screen, then click the Properties button on the right.

10. Click on the Servers tab to go to the next configuration screen.

11. On the Servers tab, check the box labeled "My server requires authentication"

12. To turn on SSL (Secure Socket Layer) authentication, click on the Advanced tab, and check both checkboxes for SSL. Be sure to check that the port numbers are correct: 995 for POP3, 993 from IMAP, and 465 for SMTP.

13. Click OK to apply your changes.

14. Exit Outlook Express completely and start it again to use the new settings.
